LEADERSHIP AT SPC

Leadership is about God inviting us to draw on His creative Spirit within us, allowing us to use

our gifts and talents to find solutions, create ministries to serve our community, and equip the

saints for the work of ministry.

Leadership is about making a difference, NOT just maintaining machinery. Does everything

we organize with structure and community have some required maintenance?

Yes—and that will likely involve some committees and meetings (though probably fewer than

most churches create). But the machinery is not the reason for the church. The church exists

as the work of Christ in this world, breaking down the walls of fear and pain in order to allow the

Gospel to break into people's lives. We believe that as Jesus came not for himself but for the

world, so too does the church exist for the glory of God and the benefit of the world. Mission is

the work of the church, not maintenance.

There is NO greater challenge, NO greater responsibility, and NO greater opportunity than

being a part of what Christ is building. What is our vision for leadership development? If we are

not investing time on a regular basis to bring others into leadership, is it because the task we

are facing is too small? If we only need a handful of leaders to carry our notebooks, conduct

our services, or maintain our machinery, maybe we are on a different mission than the one

Jesus is engaging.

Not everyone is ready to hear the leadership call. And yes, people need to graduate from being

faithful in small things to being entrusted with bigger challenges. But even small things need to be

seen as contributing to the BIG mission Jesus is conducting. If the Spirit of God is working in the

human heart, he will prepare new leaders to move from being content with fishing for just fish, to

fishing for people. Do we, as church leaders, go on fishing trips with Jesus? Do we, have an

intentional approach for inviting others into being part of this exciting process?

Being a part of new life is unforgettable—and it’s a privilege we can share when we help to

develop new leaders.
