RESOURCES - LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

LEADERSHP DEVELOPMENT

Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them  the way to live and the duties they are

to perform. But select capable men from all the people–men who fear God, trustworthy men

who hate dishonest gain–and appoint them as officials  over thousands, hundreds, fifties

and tens. – Exodus 18:20-21

Leaders are vital to the success of any organization and critical for change. In Exodus 18,

Moses was told by his father-in-law that it was never intended for one person to lead and bear

the burdens of everyone. It was essential for Moses to appoint leaders and to delegate authority

in order for God’s movement to grow. For our church, we face the same issue. In order for us

to grow and to change, we must find capable and willing leaders and share the burden of building

God’s Kingdom.

Many of us believe that leaders are born and not made. But, there are so many examples of

leaders in the Bible that are contrary to the “born leader” viewpoint; Moses, Gideon, David, Peter

and Timothy to name just a few. Yet, what really is leadership?

We believe that Jesus gave the qualifications for leadership in the church in John 13 when at

the Last Supper he got up from the table and washed the feet of His disciples and told them that

to lead in His kingdom required the heart of a servant and the willingness to step down to serve.

We believe that Paul laid out for Timothy and Titus, his disciples who led churches, the qualifications

for leaders and that those qualifications are still applicable today. The only exception we make to

those qualifications is that we recognize and encourage the leadership of Godly women in our midst.

The success of an organization depends on its leaders committed to growing and changing, what

Paul refers to as transformation. Our goal is to develop leaders who are not only well rounded

(spiritually) but also capable of transforming themselves as the church grows and needs change.
